Frequently Asked Questions

Symbol Typing & Alt Code FAQs

Answers to common questions about typing symbols, shortcuts, and troubleshooting.

How do I type Alt codes on a laptop without a numeric keypad?

If your laptop keyboard does not have a dedicated 10-key numeric keypad on the right, the top-row number keys will not work for Alt codes. You have four convenient alternatives:

  • Use Fn Key NumLock: Press Fn + NumLock to turn the letter keys (7, 8, 9, U, I, O, J, K, L, M) into a temporary numeric keypad.
  • Windows Symbol Picker: Press Win + . (period) to open Windows 10/11's built-in symbol picker.
  • Microsoft Word Alt+X: Type the hexadecimal code (e.g. 00B0 for °) and press Alt + X.
  • WayToType: Simply click any symbol on this website for instant 1-click clipboard copying.
What is the difference between Unicode, Alt Codes, and HTML Entities?

Unicode (e.g., U+00A9) is the international computing standard that assigns a universal numeric code to every character in all human languages and technical systems. Alt Codes (e.g., Alt + 0169) are Windows-specific keyboard input sequences. HTML Entities (e.g., © or ©) are markup codes used by web browsers and developers to render symbols in HTML documents without encoding conflicts.

How do you type accented letters on Mac vs Windows?

On Mac, hold the Option key and press the accent trigger: Option+e for acute (é), Option+` for grave (à), Option+u for umlaut (ü), Option+n for tilde (ñ), and Option+c for cedilla (ç), then type the letter. On Windows, use our Virtual Accent Keyboard or hold the vowel down on Windows 11 touch/onscreen keyboards.

How do I write mathematical and statistical formulas in Microsoft Word?

In Microsoft Word, press Alt + = to launch the native Equation Editor. You can type standard LaTeX and Math AutoCorrect commands such as \alpha (α), \mu (μ), \sigma (σ), \bar x (x¯), \hat y (y), \sqrt(x) (√), \sum (∑), and \pm (±), followed by hitting the Spacebar to convert them into formatted typography.

Why do some symbols display as a square box or question mark?

When a character displays as an empty rectangle (called 'tofu') or question mark (), it means the currently selected font does not contain a drawing for that specific Unicode character. Switching to a universal font like Segoe UI Symbol, Arial Unicode MS, Lucida Grande, or Noto Sans will render the character properly.

Is WayToType completely free and safe to use?

Yes, WayToType is 100% free with no registration, no installation, and no subscription fees. It processes all search and clipboard copying entirely inside your client browser, guaranteeing total privacy and zero data collection.
