Master Cedilla Accent Keyboard Shortcut Matrix (All Letters)

The cedilla (¸) is a hook-shaped diacritic placed beneath consonants. In French and Portuguese, ç softens the velar /k/ plosive to /s/ before vowels a, o, u. In Turkish, ş creates the "sh" /ʃ/ sound. In Latvian, cedillas mark palatalized consonants. Below is your complete cross-platform shortcut reference:

LINGUISTIC & GRAMMAR RULES

Linguistic, Historical & Phonetic Significance of the Cedilla (¸)

The cedilla is one of Europe's oldest orthographical innovations, originally developed to modify consonant pronunciation without creating bulky digraphs.

French: The Cédille (Softening C Before Back Vowels)

In French orthography, the letter 'c' naturally produces a soft /s/ sound before front vowels (e, i, y, as in cent, ciel, cycle). However, before back vowels (a, o, u), 'c' normally produces a hard velar plosive /k/ (as in café, col, cube).

When a root word ending in 'c' requires a suffix starting with a, o, or u while maintaining the soft /s/ sound, the cédille is mandatory:

  • français ("French" — from root France)
  • garçon ("boy") — pronounced /ɡaʁ.sɔ̃/ (without cedilla, garcon would sound like /ɡaʁ.kɔ̃/)
  • leçon ("lesson"), façon ("way / manner"), façade ("building front")
  • reçu ("received" — past participle of recevoir), aperçu ("preview / insight")
  • Rule: A cedilla is NEVER placed before 'e' or 'i' in French because 'c' is already soft (ce, ci).

Portuguese: The Cedilha

Portuguese follows identical phonological rules to French, employing the cedilha extensively across common nouns, conjugations, and augmentative suffixes:

  • coração ("heart"), ação ("action"), açúcar ("sugar"), praça ("town square")
  • começar ("to begin") → começo ("I begin" — 'c' changes to 'ç' before 'o')
  • São Paulopaulistano, março ("March"), endereço ("address").

Turkish, Azerbaijani & Kurdish: S with Cedilla (ş / Ş)

In 1928, during Mustafa Kemal Atatürk's script reform in the Republic of Turkey, the Arabic script was replaced with a phonetic Latin alphabet. The ş (S with cedilla) was adopted as an independent letter to represent the voiceless postalveolar fricative /ʃ/ ("sh"):

  • İstanbul, teşekkürler ("thank you"), Türkçe ("Turkish language"), akşam ("evening").
  • In the Turkish alphabet, Ş is the 23rd distinct letter, indexed separately after S in dictionaries.

Baltic Languages: Latvian Palatalization

In Latvian orthography, comma-like cedillas represent palatalized consonants:

  • ķ (/c/): kaķis ("cat"), ķirsis ("cherry")
  • ļ (/ʎ/): ļoti ("very"), lācis, meitene
  • ņ (/ɲ/): viņa ("she / her"), saule
  • Ģ / ģ: Note that for the letter 'g', lowercase places the cedilla above (ģ / Ģ) to avoid descending stem collision.

Etymology: From Visigothic "Zedilla" (Little Z)

The name cedilla is the diminutive of Old Spanish zeda (the letter Z), meaning "little z". In medieval Visigothic script (11th century), scribes wrote a miniature 'z' beneath the letter 'c' (the ligature Ꝣ) to indicate an affricate /ts/ sound. Over time, the miniature 'z' simplified into the modern tail hook (¸).

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Frequently Asked Questions About the Cedilla Accent

A cedilla (¸) — known in French as cédille, in Portuguese as cedilha, and in Spanish as cedilla — is a small hook or tail attached underneath certain consonants. In French and Portuguese, attaching a cedilla to 'c' (ç) softens its pronunciation from a hard velar plosive /k/ (as in 'cat') to a soft voiceless alveolar sibilant /s/ (as in 'sun') when preceding back vowels (a, o, u), as in français, garçon, and coração. In Turkish, Azerbaijani, and Kurdish, 's' with cedilla (ş) represents the "sh" sound (/ʃ/).
For lowercase ç, the short 3-digit Alt code is Alt + 135 (or 4-digit Alt + 0231). For uppercase capital Ç, the Alt code is Alt + 128 (or 4-digit Alt + 0199). For the standalone spacing cedilla mark (¸), use Alt + 0184. For Turkish ş and Ş, use Alt + 0351 and Alt + 0350.
On macOS, simply press Option + c to instantly type lowercase ç. To type capital uppercase Ç, press Option + Shift + c. You can also press and hold the c key on your keyboard until the numbered diacritics menu appears, then press 1 or click ç.
In Microsoft Word on Windows, press Ctrl + , (Comma), release both keys, and immediately type c to get ç (or Shift + C to get Ç). Alternatively, type the hexadecimal code 00E7 and press Alt + X for ç, or 00C7 followed by Alt + X for Ç.
The word cedilla is the diminutive form of the Old Spanish name for the letter Z (zeda or ceda), meaning "little z". In medieval Visigothic script (around the 11th century), scribes wrote a small letter z underneath the letter c (a ligature known as Ꝣ) to indicate a soft /ts/ or /s/ sound. Over centuries, the lower loop of the 'z' simplified into the modern tail hook (¸) adopted into French and Portuguese.
A cedilla connects directly to the bottom of the base letter without a gap (e.g. French ç, Turkish ş). In contrast, a comma-below (used in Romanian for ș / /ʃ/ and ț / /ts/) features a distinct comma shape with a visible gap or subtle detachment below the base glyph. Due to legacy Unicode 3.0 font limitations, Turkish cedilla characters were historically substituted in Romanian texts, but modern typography strictly distinguishes Romanian comma-below (U+0218, U+0219, U+021A, U+021B) from cedillas (U+015E, U+015F, U+0162, U+0163).
The standalone cedilla symbol is ¸ (U+00B8) and combining cedilla is ̧ (U+0327). For letters: ç is ç (U+00E7); Ç is Ç (U+00C7); ş is ş (U+015F); Ş is Ş (U+015E); ţ is ţ (U+0163); Ţ is Ţ (U+0162); ķ is ķ (U+0137); ļ is ļ (U+013C); ņ is ņ (U+0146); and ŗ is ŗ (U+0157).
On iOS and Android virtual touchscreen keyboards, press and hold down the letter c or s. A popup diacritics bubble will appear showing available accented variants. Without lifting your finger, slide across to the cedilla character (ç or ş) and release.
